The Prepared Piano of John Cage: A 40-minute interactive lecture-demonstration
Tzenka Dianova will share her experience preparing pianos for the music of John Cage. Tzenka has been researching and working in that area for the last eight years; during the preparation for the public performance of pieces such as Concerto for Prepared Piano and Orchestra, she has worked with established piano technicians (one of whom is employed by Steinway, NY), in order to learn the safest and most effective way to prepare a piano.
Tzenka will demonstrate most of the objects used for a successful preparation, as well as the process of inserting them in the piano. She will be glad to answer any questions related to the subject. Pieces discussed will be Bacchanale, In the Name of the Holocaust, Daughters of the Lonesome Isle, Sonatas and Interludes and Concerto for Prepared Piano and Orchestra. If you wish to discuss the preparation of any other piece by John Cage, please bring along a music score!
